The Community Cookbook

A mouth-watering collection of easy-to-make dishes from local chefs and community cooks that anyone can make

By Reverend Adrian, Amanda Semerene and Jenny Jefferies

The Community Cookbook is a heart-warming, practical, and inspiring collection of recipes born out of a unique partnership between local chefs, foodies, The Community Fridge, The Need Project and other food projects in and around Gamlingay, South Cambridgeshire. This cookbook is more than just a guide to delicious meals, it’s a celebration of food solidarity, community resilience, and the power of sharing.

Featuring easy-to-follow, low-waste recipes developed using surplus food and seasonal ingredients. From nourishing soups and hearty stews to ingenious desserts made with donated produce, these meals reflect the vibrancy and diversity of a community feeding itself.

The Collaborators

The Community Fridge
An initiative that reduces food waste by redistributing surplus food to anyone who needs it. It’s a beacon of environmental action and social connection.

The Need Project
A local charity tackling food poverty through emergency food parcels and community support networks.

Local Chefs and foodies
Chefs are the food translators between the farmers and fishermen, and consumers. From home cooks to professionals, along with people who are passionate about food, these are the people creating joy and purpose through food.

Rev Adrian Semerene says “I love food… I always have. And I also love community and all the variety that exists within it. ‘The Community Cookbook’ tells a deep story intertwining the two. A story of deliciousness, creativity, and hope. It reminds us that even in seasons of challenge, there is resourcefulness, generosity, and the quiet power of people choosing to care for one another in practical, meaningful ways.”

Amanda Semerene says “The Gamlingay Food project is an amazing testament of community coming together, for the sake of others, to help and support one another. This cookbook is simply an extension of that - another beautiful example of what happens when a community comes together. It’s more than just recipes—it’s people sharing what they have, supporting one another, and turning simple ingredients into something more. That’s what community is all about.”

Jenny Jefferies says “I hope that ‘The Community Cookbook’ doesn’t just give ideas on what and how to cook with what you have, but that it empowers people; I hope that we may all start collectively to treat food not as charity, but as a right. The Community Cookbook is a celebration of dignity, food for all, and everyone in our community who help make that happen.”

Thanks to a successful application to the South Cambridgeshire District Council Community Chest Grant, this brand-new cookbook will be provided for free to service users and used to help fundraise for further initiatives in providing food to our local communities.
