Estate’s Natural Burial Ground recognised as one of the best in the North West

Monument Meadow Natural Burial Ground in Farndon, Cheshire, has won an industry award for its excellent customer service. The burial ground was Regional Runner Up for the North West in this year’s annual People’s Awards for the Best Natural Burial Ground in the UK.

The awards, which have been running for over 25 years, are open to members of the Association of Natural Burial Grounds and organised by The Natural Death Centre charity.

The accolade is based solely on feedback from families who have laid loved ones to rest. Judges noted the ‘high level of customer care’, the ‘tranquil setting’, ‘attention to detail and compassion’ and the ‘exceptional help and guidance when arranging a ceremony’.

Monument Meadow Natural Burial Ground is an example of estate innovation and the Barnston Estate is the first estate in Cheshire to diversify land in this way.

Rosie Inman-Cook, Manager of the Association of Natural Burial Grounds, of which Monument Meadow is a member, said: “The People’s Awards are designed to celebrate the personal attention to detail and support given by staff at natural burial grounds, which can make such a difference to bereaved families.

"We were delighted to award Monument Meadow a Regional Runner-up People’s Award for their excellent customer service and care.”

Ed Barnston, Manager of the Barnston Estate, said: “Maintaining an historic estate fit for modern use requires continual innovation to ensure it remains relevant and viable for today and in the years ahead.

“At Monument Meadow, we are passionate about providing a personal and compassionate eco-friendly burial option to our local community, and we were really pleased to receive this prestigious award.”

Monument Meadow is one of over 300 natural burial sites in the UK and offers a variety of sustainable funeral options including full natural burials, cremated remains burial and scattering of ashes within its wildflower meadows.

It is set in five acres of wildflower and meadow grass with views across rolling countryside and the Clwydian Range. People of all faiths, or no faiths, from local villages and beyond are welcome and the burial ground caters for both religious and secular ceremonies.

The burial ground opened on land owned by the Barnston Estate, one of Cheshire’s oldest family estates, in Autumn 2021.
